As Vaughan's top medical spa four years in a row, we are pleased to welcome nurse Ksenya to the Starlight team. What are lip fillers?

Lip fillers are a type of dermal filler that uses synthetic materials and substances naturally found in the body. They are a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that takes less than half an hour to inject. Results are immediate and last months to years, depending on the filler used and the location where it is injected. Medical professionals use dermal fillers as a frequent solution for:

  1. Plump up lips by adding overall volume,

  2. Creating symmetry in uneven lips due to injury, genetics, and more

  3. Define specific areas, such as creating a sharper cupid's bow and,

  4. Add additional moisture to unbearably dry skin.

Types of lip filler

Hyaluronic acid (HA)is a naturally occurring acid in your skin. As a dermal filler, it provides plumpness to areas where patients wish to increase volume or where hyaluronic acid is minimal due to age. Results from HA injections usually last six months to a year.

Medical injectors favour HA fillers as they are temporary and reversible. Meaning, over time, the effects of the filler will fade or dissolve if a patient wishes to reverse their results.

Ksenya will review the types of dermal fillers available and determine the right option for your desired results. If you have saved photos for inspiration, we kindly ask that you bring them to your appointment!

Are lip fillers common?

Yes! Millions of Canadians receive lip fillers to reach their desired aesthetic each year.

How to prepare for lip fillers

The good news is lip fillers are a routine procedure with minimum preparation required. Avoid taking blood thinning medications and limit your alcohol consumption in the days leading up to your appointment. This will ensure you do not experience unnecessary bleeding at the injection site.

The initial consultation: what will we review?

Ksenya will listen to your concerns and learn more about the look you wish to achieve. If you have inspiration photos, we'd love to see them! This helps us get a visual understanding of what you wish to enhance about your lips. Keep in mind, that everyone has different lip shapes and results cannot always be replicated identically.

We will also review the process and proper aftercare for you to follow once you receive treatment.

Can I have a consultation and treatment on the same day?

Yes, you can book a consultation with Ksenya and receive treatment the same day.

What are the risks of lip filler?

Side effects of lip filler range from expected discomfort to complications, such as skin necrosis. When injected using the proper technique, patients can expect the following symptoms after treatment:

  1. Bruising

  2. Unevenness

  3. Sensitivity

  4. Temporary swelling at the injection site

  5. Collectible filler bumps

In rare cases, lip filler injected accidentally into the labial artery can cause skin necrosis, often the cause of inexperienced injectors, that causes tissue death due to lack of blood flow and oxygen to the area.

Can anyone receive lip filler?

In short, yes, anyone can receive lip filler. The amount and techniques used will depend on your lip's ability to receive dermal fillers safely.

Do lip filler injections hurt?

Injections equal needles. There's simply no way around it! At Starlight, we aim to make our client's experiences as comfortable as possible. To assist with discomfort at the time of injecting, nurse Ksenya will apply a numbing cream to help with pain management.

The lips are a vascular area filled with vessels and arteries that don't love to get a poke. Clients can expect sensitivity, but the discomfort level will vary based on your pain tolerance. Don't worry - nurse Ksenya has a gentle hand, and we have stress balls to help!

What happens if I do not like my results?

As mentioned earlier, lip fillers are reversible. If you are new to dermal fillers nurse Ksenya recommends starting with less to gauge your results. If your results are not as desired, we can dissolve HA filler using Hyaluronidase, which has an immediate effect.

Aftercare

After your treatment, you should follow a few simple aftercare steps to help your lips heal quickly:

  • Apply ice packs to the treated area to minimize swelling and help with sensitivity.

  • Do not massage or touch the treatment area to avoid irritation and bacteria from entering the injection site.

  • Do not expose yourself to heat or prolonged sun exposure for a minimum of 24 hours after treatment.
